Veselin Topalov was born March 15, 1975, in the town of Ruse, Bulgaria. He started playing chess at eight. Soon he demonstraded his game tallent and winning spirit when he won the Under 14 World Championship in Puerto Rico in 1989. On the following year he got the silver at the Under 16 World Championship in Singapore. In 1992 he was entitled Grandmaster.
Since 1995 he participates in high category competitions and achieves a number of important victories in Polanica Zdroj, Elenite, Amsterdam, Madrid, Leon.
He continued his steady climb in the FIDE ratings.
The year 2005 has probably been the strangest, yet most rewarding in his career. He started by a third place in Courus and a disappointing performance in Dortmund. And he finished by taking the World Champion title in San Luis, Argentina by the amazing 1,5 points advantage. Adding to this the joint first place in Linares (where he defeated Kasparov in his last oficial game) and a victory in Mtel Masters he soon became top of the list with over 2800 rating.
